The entire book is written in Hebrew prose except for Jonah's prayer. In English Bibles, Jonah is the fifth of the twelve Minor Prophets. In the Hebrew canon it belonged to the composite book called “The Twelve.” (See Genre and Literary Style for HOSEA for more information.)

Themes:

God's mercy; God's sovereignty over nature

The mercy of God to those who do not deserve it is one of the great themes of the Bible. In this book it is cast in a new light. God's sovereignty is seen explicitly in four things “God prepared” in the book: a great fish (1:17); a gourd (4:6); a worm (4:7); and a vehement east wind (4:8).
